Being an art photographer is… interesting. Many, many times, photographers find themselves in a proverbial corner. They become very good at what they do, but they do it in a very prescribed and predictable way. Their “look” becomes their hallmark…and their curse. Often, photographers find themselves doing the same thing, over and over again, until there is little creativity or variety involved. This is completely understandable: customers come to them precisely because of what they have produced in the past, and they feel bound to repeat that for each new customer that walks in the door.
Contrast that with artists. Most artists, “great” or “small”, thrive on discovery. At the heart of the creative process is the need to explore, whether it be a wonderful new blend of hues on their pallet, or a new stroke with their pencil that catches the paper’s fibers just so… or a loosening of the rendition of muscle tones in their sculpture that gives the figure some quality they’ve never found before.
As an artist, I am continually trying new things. Sometimes my explorations take me in the direction of new ways of seeing and using light. Sometimes, it is ways of incorporating new elements in my images to create new impact. Whatever direction I go, it is always with the goal of slowly evolving my work as a lifelong creative endeavor. Destination: Art.
About the image: Alicia, my youngest, is a very sensitive and intelligent soul. Although all the sweetness and innocence of childhood is alive within her, I wanted to portray that in balance with the deeper side of her nature. Feel free to comment and let me know what you think!
